BBFC Centenary

The BBFC is celebrating its 100th year in 2012 and we are planning a number of activities to mark the occasion.

From January 2012, cinema-goers across the UK will see updated versions of vintage theatrical black cards ahead of all 2012 releases. The six retro designs, based on those used in 1913, the 1940s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and the present day, will be released as a series, with each design appearing for two months at a time.

The first ‘retro’ card* to be shown in cinemas in 2012 will be based on the 1913 theatrical card.

The second retro black card is based on those seen from 1948 onwards.

The retro designs will also be appearing on BBFC Centenary merchandise, available for purchase through the website and select museums and cinemas in the UK.

In Autumn 2012, a book charting 100 years of classification will be available with contributions from scholars and film experts, as well as current and previous Directors of the BBFC.

This page will be updated regularly with further BBFC Centenary events. You can also view our archive page where you can find significant items from the last 100 years.
